Tipperne and Værnengene
For nature lovers and birdwatching enthusiasts, the Tipper peninsula is a real El Dorado.
Whatever the season, there are always exciting birds to look at, and the area has excellent observation points from towers, paths and roads. The area is internationally recognised and one of the most important bird sanctuaries in Northern Europe.
Tipperne is located in a fertile marsh meadow at the base of Ringkøbing Fjord. The area
takes the form of a peninsula that extends a good way into the fjord. Tipperne consists of
around 3,000 hectares of flat landscape. The area comprises a number of small lakes and
meadows criss-crossed by channels and ditches. Large sections are covered with banks of
reeds. However, the Bjålum Klit area differs from the rest of Tipperne as it consists of
dunes, heath and bogs with bushy vegetation.
As a birdwatching area, the Tipper peninsula comprises three specified sections: Bjålum Klit,
Værnengene and Tipperne. The name “Tipperne” comes from the word “tip”, which refers
to an area of meadow with grassy knolls.
