Esbjerg - Sneum Sluse
The safety of the population and consideration for the birds go hand in hand at Sneum Sluse
south of Esbjerg. When, ten years or so ago, work was carried out to reinforce the Tjæreborg Dike, a large shallow lake was established at the same time. Today, it is one of the finest areas for birds in the region
How do I get to Sneum Sluse?
From Esbjerg, take road no. 24 towards Ribe. Follow this main road a few kilometres past
Tjæreborg, the station town, to where the landscape opens up and you can see the sea
wall on your right. On your left, you will see a row of giant wind turbines. A few hundred
metres before the exit to Darum, you will see Sneum Slusevej to your right. If you would
like to see the birds in the shallow easterly part of the lake, turn off Sneum Slusevej as soon as you come to a gravel track on your right-hand side. If you want to go to the car park and the lock itself, simply follow the asphalted road through the small cabin village – approx. 1 km. If you are approaching from the south (from Ribe) the road you need is the A11.
