Central West Jutland

Theme: Birds in and around the inlets in West Jutland

Fugle & Ferie recommends a four-day mini-break with birding in the area to the north and south of Ringkøbing Fjord.

The inlet areas in West Jutland are important resting areas and larders for hundreds of thousands of birds throughout the year. Some species stay only for a short time, one or two weeks, while others take their time before continuing the journey to breeding places or winter quarters in the south. This bedlam of birds coming and going is like a busy railway station bustling with hungry travellers. No two days are alike in this junction, where the time of year decides the species in the majority and where they are going.

The best periods are the spring and autumn months. The geese are some of the most conspicuous visitors in the area. The southern part, Tipperne and Skjern Enge (Skjern River Delta), are natural centres for almost all species of migratory birds passing through northern Europe . It is possible to combine a visit to the northern part of the Jutland Wadden Sea with a visit to Skjern River Delta and the inlets north of Ringkøbing Fjord, making for a varied and unforgettable birding holiday.

Period: Autumn excursion: from the end of August to and including October

Spring excursion: April and May.
